Hearing loss affects approximately 33 percent of seniors in the U.S. Could your mom be one of them? There are some conditions that can lead to temporary hearing loss. If they’ve been ruled out, your mom could be losing her hearing. She may need help adjusting to the changes.
How to know if Mom is losing hearing?
Signs of Hearing Loss.
When you go out with your mom, does she struggle to hear what you’re saying? Does she turn up the TV louder than you feel is necessary? Does she become frustrated because she didn’t hear something you said? Does she shy away from meeting new people because she is never able to hear full conversations?
Those are all signs that your mom is having difficulty with her hearing. If you suspect she is, talk to her doctor. The doctor can perform a quick hearing test and refer your mom to a specialist if necessary.
Quick Tests at Home.
If your mom doesn’t want to go to the doctor, there are hearing tests that can be done at home. One at-home test involves listening to the speaker and clicking on the image that matches what is said. Background noise is added and increased to see if that makes it harder to hear what the speaker says. It’s a good place to start. If the tests show a problem, you can then work on getting your mom to see a doctor.
What if Hearing Loss is Diagnosed?
If your mom is dealing with hearing loss, doctors can look at the cause. Sometimes, it’s a simple issue of too much earwax blocking the ear canal. Ear infections may affect hearing. If a temporary condition is not the case, hearing aids can help amplify sounds.
When you’re with your mom, look at her while you speak. Speak slowly and clearly. If there is background noise interfering with your conversation, mute it or find a better location.
Consult a doctor about your mom’s worsening hearing. Once you know what’s going on, there are home care services that can help. If your mom’s hearing is going and she shouldn’t be driving, caregivers can drive her to local businesses and health offices. If she withdraws while she gets used to the news, caregivers provide companionship.
Your mom can have a caregiver drive her to stores and assist her in finding items. Caregivers can schedule appointments and help your mom understand what others are asking. Call us to discuss other services that help seniors with hearing loss.
