If you’re on the fence about hiring home care for your aging relative, it may be because you’ve heard some myths that make you question if home care is right for them.
Perhaps you’re concerned that the care they’ll receive won’t be as good as what you can provide yourself. Or, maybe you’re not sure that the kind of help the older adult needs isn’t the kind of help that home care offers. Knowing the truth about some of they myths you may have heard about home care could help you to make the right decision. Here are 4 myths about home care and the facts behind them.
Myth #1: Seniors have to be very ill to use home care.
Truth: Home care providers offer non-medical services, so they can be an asset to seniors who are very ill and to those who simply need a little extra help around the house. Home care providers assist with activities of daily living, like dressing, using the bathroom, and basic hygiene. They also do things like help keep the house clean, prepare meals, make beds, and do laundry. So, even older adults who are healthy, but getting frail or weak because of advanced age can benefit from the services of home care.
Myth #2: Families have no control over the home care providers who come.
Truth: Home care agencies have a pool of staff members to choose from. All of them have been background checked and are experienced in assisting older adults. Agencies try to match the experiences of their staff members to the needs of the individual. In addition, they make an effort to ensure that personalities mesh as well. If the match between a staff member and the senior doesn’t work out, the agency will send someone else.
Myth #3: Seniors who have family members don’t need home care.
Truth: It’s true that home care can never replace family caregivers. However, family caregivers need and deserve help. Being a caregiver can be exhausting and require more time than family members have because of other responsibilities. Home care can fill in the gaps in your aging relative’s care calendar, ensuring they have care when family members are not available.
Myth #4: Home care doesn’t provide care during the overnight hours.
Truth: Many seniors need someone to stay with them overnight. They may have trouble getting out of bed on their own, making it difficult for them to get to the bathroom or get a drink. Or, they may have cognitive problems that cause confusion or agitation during the night. Home care can be scheduled for overnight care on as many days of the week as needed.
